An Internship Certificate is a two-year certificate for those who have completed at least 50% of an approved New York State graduate program leading to an Initial Certificate.
With a valid Internship Certificate, or a letter from your school confirming that you are eligible for an Internship Certificate (see sample here), you can apply to NYC Public Schools teaching positions in your certification area. Citywide there is the greatest need in the following subject areas: English as a New Language, Science, Math, World Languages, Bilingual Education, and Students with Disabilities. There is also a need for teachers in parts of Brooklyn and the Bronx.
You are not required to take NYSED certification exams in order to obtain an Internship Certificate. Reach out to your college or university certification office to find out if you are eligible for an Internship Certificate. Learn more about this certificate type from NYSED here and search for the specific requirements in your subject area here (select Internship Certificate as the certificate type).
Note that when you complete or leave your college or university program, your Internship Certificate will no longer be valid and you will need to apply for an Initial Certificate.
