Your eligibility for salary step credit based on substitute teaching will depend on whether the service was within NYC Public Schools (NYCPS) or outside of NYCPS.
Substitute teaching experience within NYCPS:
Appointed teachers may receive credit for non-appointed service (5ba regular substitutes) if they served at least 85 days in a semester. Service in summer or evening schools is not accepted.
Prior per diem service is creditable only if you worked at least 85 aggregate days (per diem service is only credited in blocks of 85 days). For every block of 85 days worked, one term of credit will be awarded. The 85 days do not have to be consecutive and do not need to be at the same location, but they do need to be within the same school year.
Substitute teaching experience outside of NYCPS:
Substitute teaching outside of NYCPS is not creditable for salary step placement. You can review this article for more information about what work experience is eligible for salary step credit.
See here for additional details about completing the salary step application in the Salary Application System. Please note that you will not be able to apply for salary steps or salary differentials until after you have been hired.
