If you have completed a teacher preparation program in another state, your best pathway to NYS teacher certification is through the Program Completer pathway. This pathway requires candidates to have completed a comparable approved teacher preparation program that would lead to an institutional recommendation for certification in the state the college is located.
Note that the NYS Education Department (NYSED) does not pre-approve teacher preparation programs completed in other U.S. States or Territories. You will have to submit an application for certification to NYSED and have your credentials reviewed to determine your eligibility for certification.
To determine your eligibility:
- Review the pathway requirements to confirm that you meet them
- Review the specific details for applicants from other states who hold certification in specific subject areas to determine if they apply to you
- Search for your certification area and this pathway on the NYSED certification requirements webpage to see any additional requirements specific to your certification area
If you meet the requirements for the Program Completer pathway, you will need to apply here for certification with NYSED. Note that NYC Public Schools does not grant teacher certification.
If you are not eligible for the Program Completer pathway, you may want to consider the Endorsement of Certificate or Individual Evaluation pathways. See here for additional information about these pathways.
Visit the NYSED webpage for applicants from other states for additional information.
