All foreign teacher applicants must satisfy work eligibility and certification requirements in order to become a teacher with the NYC Department of Education. You must apply using the following steps:
- You must meet work authorization status. This means that you must have citizenship, residency, or a work visa that allows you to work. See here for additional information about visa sponsorship.
- Review the coursework and eligibility requirements on the NYSED Evaluation of Foreign Credentials.
- You must apply for New York State teacher certification by following and completing all the steps on the webpage linked above. Additional information can be found on the NYSED Office of Teaching Initiatives webpage.
- Once it is determined that you are eligible to receive NYSED teaching certification, submit a NYC Online Teacher Application. Read this article or review the Guide to the NYC Online Teacher Application for support in completing your application.
NOTE: The New York City Department of Education is unable to evaluate your application until your credentials have been evaluated by the New York State Education Department. Once you have been issued NYSED certification, the Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality will evaluate your application to determine your eligibility to be hired and will contact you with any further questions.
