All foreign teacher applicants must satisfy work eligibility and certification requirements in order to become a teacher with NYC Public Schools (NYCPS). You must meet the following requirements:
- You must hold work authorization status. This means that you must have citizenship, residency, or a work visa that allows you to work in the United States. See here for additional information about visa sponsorship.
- You must hold teacher certification from the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Review the NYSED requirements here to get started with your foreign credentials evaluation.
Once you hold work authorization status and it is determined that you are eligible to receive NYSED teaching certification, you can begin your NYC Online Teacher Application. Read this article or review the NYCPS Teacher Application Guide for support in completing your application.
NOTE: NYCPS is unable to evaluate your application until your credentials have been evaluated by the NYSED. Once you have been issued NYSED certification, the Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality will evaluate your application to determine your eligibility to be hired and will contact you with any further questions.
