The UFT and NYC government have negotiated the following salary schedule for appointed teachers. For the 2021-2022 school year, teachers with a bachelor's degree and no prior teaching experience or related non-teaching experience (for certain licenses) will be eligible for a minimum starting salary of $61,070. Teachers with a master's degree and no prior teaching experience or related non-teaching experience (for certain licenses) are eligible for a minimum starting salary of $68,652. NY State teaching certification is required to be hired as a full-time classroom teacher and be eligible for these salaries.
*You can view the entire salary schedule here.
Note: New teachers will initially be staffed at the base salary of $61,070. It is your responsibility to apply for salary steps and/or salary differentials using the Salary Application within six months of being hired. It is not possible to complete this application until after you have been hired.
The Office of Salary Services will verify your previous work history to determine your correct Salary Step on the salary schedule. They will also verify your educational background to determine your correct Salary Differential. If you do not apply for salary steps or salary differentials, you will not be considered for pay above the base salary of $61,070. This process is not automatic and is separate from your NYC Online Teacher Application.
You must submit the application within 6 months of your appointment or start date in order to receive retroactive Salary Step pay. Additionally, new employees to the NYC DOE who qualify for a differential at the time of their hiring must file an application for a differential within 6 months of their start date.
The Office of Teacher Recruitment & Quality cannot provide you with an estimate of what your salary will be. You can learn more and understand the salary schedule by reading our other articles about salary and visiting the United Federations of Teachers (UFT) website.
