Program Overview
For over twenty years, the NYC Teaching Fellows has been one of the nation’s largest and most selective alternative routes to teacher certification, training exceptional teachers committed to a better future for NYC students. This means that Fellows go where they are needed most – they teach in high-need communities; at schools with high populations of students with disabilities or English Language Learners; in the Bronx and in Title I funded schools. Fellows know that when there are strong leaders in the classroom, all students – no matter their circumstances – have the opportunity to achieve and succeed. They work to build safe, respectful classrooms and learn to engage students, parents, and their communities in raising student achievement.
The program provides an expedited immersion training experience over the summer. Fellows train from June to August, are placed at a Teaching Academy, and paired with an experienced teacher in their classroom during training to complete their classroom-based field experience. Fellows simultaneously attend Skill-Building Sessions led by NYCTF program staff. Participants receive a stipend during training.
Fellows who successfully complete the rigorous summer training program become full-time teachers in September and will be eligible to teach in a New York City public school while earning their master’s degree in education. Fellows train to teach in subject areas including Math, Science, Special Education and Spanish Language.*
*Subject areas vary year to year based on the hiring needs of NYC schools.
Who We Look For
The NYC Teaching Fellows’ training is designed to transform individuals with little to no background in education into great teachers through a sharp, narrow focus on core teaching skills and techniques. These foundational skills are hallmarks of effective teaching, and are characteristic of effective teaching in every classroom, regardless of grade level, content area, or instructional setting.
There is no one profile of an ideal candidate. There is also no age cap to apply. You may have built a successful career in business or engineering and now wish to give back as a Special Education teacher. You could be a high-achieving recent graduate who majored in economics who now wants to share your passion for mathematics with NYC students. You might be someone who discovered their passion for teaching after retirement. Whatever your background, you believe that every student can achieve at a high-level and will do whatever it takes to help them get there.
BRING YOUR BEST. TEACH.
