In 2017, the New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) furthered its commitment to high-quality early care and education with the launch of 3-K. It is the most ambitious effort in U.S. history to give every three-year-old in New York City the same high-quality education for free. The path to 3-K started in School Districts 7 (South Bronx) and 23 (Brooklyn).
3-K is currently offered in:

- District 6 (Washington Heights & Inwood)
- District 7 (South Bronx)
- District 8 (Throgs Neck, Country Club, Pelham Bay, Castle Hill, Soundview, Hunts Point)
- District 9 (Highbridge, University Heights)
- District 12 (Central Bronx)
- District 14 (Greenpoint, Williamsburg)
- District 16 (Bedford-Stuyvesant)
- District 19 (East New York)
- District 23 (Brownsville, East New York, Ocean Hill)
- District 27 (Rockaways, Howard Beach, Broad Channel)
- District 29 (Cambria Heights, Hollis, Laurelton, Queens Village, Springfield Gardens, St. Albans)
