To obtain initial certification as a CTE teacher, you must complete three courses (totaling 9 credits) at an acceptable institution. These courses must fulfill the following requirements as outlined by the New York State Education Department (NYSED):
- Human Development and Learning
- Teaching Students with Disabilities & Special Health-Care Needs
- Curriculum and Instruction

New York City College of Technology (City Tech) offers an extensive course catalog, including courses that meet these CTE initial certification course requirements. Below are suggested courses from City Tech’s CTE department to meet each course requirement:
- Human Development and Learning: EDU 3610 Human Learning and Instruction
- Teaching Students with Disabilities & Special Health-Care Needs: EDU 2455 Methods of Special Needs Students
- Curriculum and Instruction: EDU 2362 Methods of Teaching CTE
Additionally, City Tech offers EDU 4872 Supervised Teaching in CTE, which fulfills the student teaching requirement of at least 40 days for initial certification.
